The Emergency Surgery Course is a collaboration between the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery. The course has been taught in-person and virtually to students from over the globe. The purpose of the course is to present and actively discuss management of  the  general surgery emergencies that we all encounter when on call. The 2 day course has presentations reviewing the current literature on management of these emergencies and interactive case discussions.

Topics covered include:

  • abdominal sepsis,

  • mesenteric ischemia,

  • small and large bowel obstruction,

  • pancreatitis, colorectal emergencies,

  • acute cholecystitis,

  • peptic ulcer disease,

  • GI bleeding,

  • appendicitis,

  • nontraumatic hemoperitoneum,

  • necrotizing soft tissue infections, and

  • postoperative abdominal complications.

Optional lectures are also available on obstetric/gynecologic emergencies, anorectal emergencies, esophageal emergencies and management of the incarcerated hernia.

Smaller breakout sessions optimize discussion of operative videos, management of the open abdomen/abdominal compartment syndrome, acute pancreatitis and review of CT images. The active discussion between the faculty members and students on management of the patients is a memorable component of the course. The content of the course provides invaluable information and discussion for all who care for the patient with a general surgical emergency.  The course will help prepare senior surgical residents, fellows and practicing surgeons for emergency surgery call.
